Well just a quick October update – final training block before Austin 70.3 in the bank! It’s been an absolute blast: winning bike races, long weekend training camp, and seriously enjoying the surprisingly sunny Vancouver fall.
I recently came back from winning the Dark30 awesomeness called the Oregon Coast Gravel Epic in just under 5 hours. Before I left, Andrew Fullerton of West Point Multisport tweeked the fit on my Trek XO1 cyclocross bike – my around-town commuter, so had to take the pannier rack off. ;) 10,000ft of climbing in this race means just as much downhill so I had to be comfortable to cruise the gravel descents. It certainly paid off as I ended up actually 5th overall in the 73 mile (117 km) ride. A trio of Mighty Pirates came down as well including my strong man Savage. Between all of us we finished 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th. I even stole a Strava KOM from 3rd overall Mighty rider Rob Hargrove (sorry, I have to boast the small victories on these speedy boys!).
Probably my favourite moment was getting interviewed by the Yachats Gazette. Allen Taylor is the 10-year-old founder of TYG. It was such a pleasure to meet this young man. I really loved chatting with him! I’m looking forward to seeing my interview in print.
I have to say if you’re in the Pacific Northwest and like epic bike races/rides, awesome race support, great community feel and FREE BEER, put the Dark30 races on your 2014 calendar. They even put on an Olympic distance “Tri at the Grove” in July. I’ll certainly be back!
